Polly Puffer Fish
Me not talk good like other Ocean Protectors. Well, that not always true. Me find a special voice for big stuff. Like, I was able to tell everyone about the S.S. Yongala, a luxurious passenger ship that was sunk during a cyclone in 1911. Hey! There me go again...
I think all of the readers of “Duckey and the Ocean Protectors” are curious about you, Polly! When did you begin to speak so clearly about facts?
Me not talk much so not know! When me be with Ocean Protectors, me get many surprises, like fancy words and big bubbles!
Does it hurt when you puff up?
Not hurt. Tickles more.
What causes you to puff up?
Actually, the process of puffing is a natural reaction when a puffer fish feels threatened. By taking in air and water, the body of the puffer fish, technically known as a Tetraodontidae enlarges, with spikes protrduding from our bodies. This scares away larger animals that try to eat us.
You just did it again.
What me do?
Never mind. Can you tell us about your special power?
Me sometimes blow big bubbles with strong power. Bubbles push away barrels of bad human stuff.
Polly, I think you are a very smart, brave, little fish. You saved that little angelfish with your powerful bubbles.
Thank you. Me like to help. Me hope someone help me get unstuck from fishing line, too!
What was the most important lesson you learned from your recent adventure with the Ocean Protectors?
I’d have to say that size is not important. A small creature, like me, can make a big difference. It’s what’s in your head and your heart that makes the big difference.
I could not have said that better myself, Polly.
Me glad!
